Hyrax or RPE

Our office in Orlando, FL 32809, uses Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) or Hyrax to widen the upper jaw to fit the bottom and upper teeth better. This appliance is used to widen one or both sides of the upper jaw, to manage the height of the face and to tip teeth.

The patient will make one (1) turn each day for 28 days. If all goes as planned, activation may be complete at the end of the 28 days. At that time, Dr. Mendez, our orthodontist in Orlando, FL, 32809, will decide if more turns are necessary.

The Swivel key is inserted into the hole and turns. Once the key touches the housing, it marks one full turn. Every full turn expands the jaw by one mm. The appliance is allowed to remain inactive for six months or more for the bone to fill in.

After receiving your Hyrax or RPE from our office near you, remember to brush them when you brush your teeth.

Make sure there is no food left between the palate and the appliance.

Use mouthwash every time you brush your teeth.

Taking care of your Hyrax or RPE doesn’t have to be difficult. Remember it’s not forever and if don’t listen to your orthodontist your result are not going to be favorable for the treatment.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Hyrax or RPE, contact our office near you, and our team will be glad to assist you.
